The curvature of the legs, paw feet and stretcher surmounted by an urn are suggestive of an Italian origin. Table top covered in antique red velvet, it may have once had a stone top. An impressive late 17th century Dutch Delft blue and white vase, Lamped. The bulbous vase finely painted in underglaze blue. Depicting Chinese courtiers wearing elaborate robes in a lush garden with exotic plants. including palm trees bearing coconuts, their trunks covered in ivy. Several comparable example at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Holland. Lamped and mounted on a hand carved and hand gilt wooden base, fitted with antiqued brass plate with UK fittings, brown silk flex and black UK plug. Can be converted for EU or US use. Lampshades are not included.

The evident charm of this sitter is characteristic of the work of Sir Godfrey Kneller and his studio, most probably Edward Byng. Edward Byng (circa 1676–1753) trained as an artist and became an assistant to Godfrey Kneller, circa 1693. At the time of Kneller’s death in 1723 Byng was his chief assistant and lived with him at a house in Great Queen Street. Kneller’s will recorded that Byng had “for many years faithfully served me”, gave him a pension of £100 a year and entrusted him with seeing that Kneller’s unfinished work was completed, for which he would receive the outstanding payments.

The peony is one of the flowers of the four seasons and represents the Spring. It symbolizes wealth and honour, honour in the sense of high rank, having an official position, or high social status. Plum Blossom (Prunus) / Meihua : Plum Meihua is one of the most important plants in Chinese art. Their flowers grow on knurled old angular branches, the flowers are fragile and pure, so they can be a symbol of vigour in old age as well as purity. The tree is the first to flower after the long hard winter, symbolically it can represent perseverance as well as renewal.
