Regency Black Painted Plaster Figure of a Muse by Humphrey Hopper

A Regency black painted plaster standing female figure light by Humphrey Hopper depicted in classical dress, holding aloft a candle light with etched floral glass shade, on a circular base. The shade replaced. Signed and Dated on the back of the base “N 18-1809” and “H”. Perfect condition. Humphrey Hopper (1765-1844) may have started his career as a mason. He completed his education as a mature man of 36 by enrolling in the Royal Academy Schools in February 1801 to study sculpture. He was a successful student, winning a silver medal in December 1802. Part of his output at the time was tasteful decorative work in plaster. This included graceful, classical nymphs and vestals designed to hold lamps, such as the one for sale here.
